Employee Assistance Programs
Personal problems such as alcohol and drug abuse, emotional turmoil, and mental illness are known to affect 20-25% of Hawaii's population. The impact of these personal problems, however, extends far beyond the individual troubled employee. When dysfunctional people bring their concerns to work, peers, immediate supervisors, and management-level staff spend valuable time dealing with a wide range of legal, disciplinary, morale, absenteeism, and interpersonal problems that may spread throughout the work site. For example, over 40% of industrial injuries and fatalities may be caused by alcohol abuse, 6% of all long-term disability claims result from mental disorders, and workplace violence is an increasing concern.

It is with this awareness that many organizations have chosen to assist their supervisory and staff employees by making available the services of licensed professionals who offer management support through training and on-going consultation, as well as being available for psychological assessment, short-term treatment, and referral services to troubled workers. An expert in psychological diagnosis and treatment is uniquely suited to provide the range of essential services typically offered in a professional Employee Assistance Program.

The philosophy of the Employee Assistance Program is that people are both healthier and happier when they are engaged in productive activity in an environment that includes friends and co-workers. Our services thus seek to minimize drastic changes in a person's lifestyle and surroundings when help is sought in resolving a crisis.

Dr. Farkas has provided Employee Assistance Program services to organizations and businesses throughout Hawaii since 1981.
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
When violence or another trauma occurs in the workplace, those who have been affected directly, either as victims or witnesses, must have time and resources to heal the psychological and physical wounds.

Providing employees with rapid access to a professional experienced in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is important to cope with the short-term experience of trauma, and to reduce the likelihood of long-term psychological disability and disruption of work and family adjustment.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is a process of guided ventilation, education and counseling through which victims and witness of violence can better deal with the psychological aftermath and regain a sense of mastery over their shaken work environment and lives.

Dr. Farkas has offered Critical Incident Stress Debriefing services over the past 26 years in a variety of trauma-related incidents, including shootings and stabbings, accidental deaths, suicides and industrial fatalities. He is a certified member of the National Disaster Medical Assistance Team, which provides Critical Incident Stress Debriefing services during national disasters.
